Congratulations Prof. Dr. Jacobus (Jacques) Wilhelmus Maria Noordermeer

 Professor Jacobus (Jacques) Wilhelmus Maria Noordermeer was born on 27^th June 1947. He obtained his Master of Science degree in Biochemistry at Delft University of Technology in 1970 and Doctorate degree in Physical Chemistry, Rheological Properties of Polymeric Materials from the same university in 1974. He worked as a Post-doctoral Researcher (Polymer Rheology) at University of Wisconsin (Madison, USA), then started his career at General Electric Plastics (Bergen op Zoom, the Netherlands) as Manager of Application Engineering (1977-1980); DSM Elastomers (Geleen) as Director of Research and Application Technology for Keltan EPDM rubber and R&D Coordinator between the Netherlands, USA, Brazil and Japan (1981-1999). From 1995 to 1999, he worked as a part-time professor at the University of Twente (UT) (Enschede) along with his job at DSM Elastomers; and from 2000 to 2012 became a full-time professor as Chair of Elastomer Technology and Engineering (ETE). Having officially retired in 2012, he is now Emeritus Professor under the Chair of ETE at the Faculty of Engineering Technology, UT. As a world renowned expert, he was appointed by several organizations related to rubbers and polymers such as Chairman of European Technical Committee International Institute of Synthetic Rubber producers (1990-1994); Board Member of the Netherlands Institute of Materials (1999-2006); Management Team of the Dutch Polymer Institute and Scientific Chairman for the Technology Area “Rubber Technology” (2002-2012). He is currently a Chairman of IRCO (International Rubber Conference Organization) (2017-present) and Editorial Board Member of Rubber Chemistry and Technology and Journal of Rubber Research.

Prof. Noordermeer’s expertise on the rubber and polymer technology has been recognized worldwide. His excellent proficiency that has been praised by the rubber community involves synthetic rubbers especially on EPDM rubber, thermoplastic elastomers, vulcanization chemistry, rubber recycling and devulcanization and silica-silane technology for tires. By combining his experience in industry and his solid background on academic, he successfully established his research group that serves the need from rubber industry across Europe and beyond. Through his life, he has devoted himself to education and research contributing to the significant development in science and technology of elastomers with more than 200 publications, 15 patents and several book chapters. His excellence is reflected by several awards such as Gold Medal of the IRCO (2005/2006), George S. Whitby Award of the American Chemical Society, Rubber Division (2010), Dutch Master of Materials (2011), and Lifetime Achievement Award for Innovation and Excellence International Tyre Technology Organization (2016).

His contributions to Thailand and Prince of Songkla University date back to his first visit to Faculty of Science and Technology in 2003 when he gave his lectures and discussed with staff at the Department of Rubber Technology and Polymer Science on a possible collaboration. Strong collaborating works were started after 2004 when he supervised Post-doctoral researcher and co-supervised first PhD student from PSU. Since then, he continuously works in close collaboration with Polymer Technology Program of the Faculty that led to a MOU signing between PSU and UT, and an establishment of Double Degree Program in 2008 funded by the Dutch Natural Rubber Foundation (Rubber Stichting). This Double Degree Program has been successfully executed over the past 10 years till the present days. So far, he contributed greatly to the development of 4 PSU academic staff and co-supervised 8 PhD students under Polymer Technology PhD Program. Around 50 joint publications in peer-reviewed international journals have been produced with many presentations around the world creating recognition of the strong collaborative work between PSU and UT. The works established have a high impact on the development of rubber industry especially to tire sector. Through the eyes of his students, Prof. Noordermeer is one of the great teachers who tirelessly devoted himself to teaching and educating with his passion and care. His responsibility towards a development of each student under his supervision ensures a high quality education.

Despite the respectable age of 72, Prof. Noordermeer continues working very actively for the benefits of mankind both inside and outside the university. In addition to his dedication to academic world, he also contributes to locals and society working voluntarily for all kinds of activities. In April 2019, he has received a Royal Award for a title of ‘Officer in the order of Orange-Nassau’ of the Netherlands. An achievement of a Ribbon in the Netherlands is highly honorable and distinctive, indicating that the receiver has performed great activities within a lifetime. The Officer Ribbons are awarded to only a small number of people per year.

In recognition of his academic excellence, contributions and dedication to the advancement of science, research and the development of staff at Prince of Songkla University, the Council of Prince of Songkla University in the 407^th Meeting (3/2019) on 1^st June 2019 unanimously agreed to award an Honorary Doctorate to Professor Jacobus (Jacques) Wilhelmus Maria Noordermeer.

ศาสตราจารย์ ดร.ยาโคบุส วิลเฮลมุส มาเรีย นอร์เดอร์เมียร์ เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 27 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2490 สำเร็จการศึกษาระดับปริญญาโทด้านชีวเคมี จาก Delft University of Technology เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2513 และสำเร็จการศึกษาระดับปริญญาเอกด้านเคมีเชิงฟิสิกส์ สมบัติการไหลของวัสดุพอลิเมอร์ จากมหาวิทยาลัยเดียวกัน ในปี พ.ศ. 2517 จากนั้นได้ศึกษาวิจัยระดับหลังปริญญาเอกด้านรีโอโลยีของพอลิเมอร์ที่ University of Wisconsin ก่อนที่จะเริ่มการทำงานที่บริษัท General Electric Plastics ราชอาณาจักรเนเธอร์แลนด์ ในตำแหน่งผู้จัดการฝ่ายวิศวกรรมการประยุกต์ใช้ (พ.ศ. 2520-2523) บริษัท DSM Elastomers ในตำแหน่งผู้อำนวยการฝ่ายวิจัยและเทคโนโลยีการประยุกต์ใช้ยาง Keltan EPDM และผู้ประสานงานด้านวิจัยและพัฒนาระหว่างราชอาณาจักรเนเธอร์แลนด์ สหรัฐอเมริกา บราซิลและญี่ปุ่น (พ.ศ. 2524-2542) ด้านการทำงานในมหาวิทยาลัย ศาสตราจารย์ ดร.ยาโคบุส วิลเฮลมุส มาเรีย นอร์เดอร์เมียร์ ดำรงตำแหน่งศาสตราจารย์แบบไม่เต็มเวลาในช่วงปี พ.ศ. 2538-2542 ที่ University of Twente (UT) ควบคู่ไปกับการทำงานที่ DSM Elastomers ก่อนที่จะดำรงตำแหน่งศาสตราจารย์ที่ทำงานเต็มเวลาในฐานะหัวหน้ากลุ่มวิจัยเทคโนโลยีและวิศวกรรมยาง ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2543 จนกระทั่งเกษียณจากตำแหน่งเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2555 ปัจจุบันดำรงตำแหน่งศาสตราจารย์กิตติคุณ ที่ Faculty of Engineering Technology, University of Twente ศาสตราจารย์ ดร.ยาโคบุส วิลเฮลมุส มาเรีย นอร์เดอร์เมียร์ เป็นผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านยางและพอลิเมอร์ที่มีชื่อเสียงของโลก ได้รับแต่งตั้งให้ดำรงตำแหน่งสำคัญในองค์กรต่างๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้อง เช่น เป็นประธานคณะกรรมมาธิการยุโรปด้านเทคนิคของสถาบันผู้ผลิตยางสังเคราะห์ (พ.ศ. 2533-2537) กรรมการบริหารของสถาบันวัสดุแห่งเนเธอร์แลนด์ (พ.ศ. 2542-2549) คณะผู้บริหารของสถาบันพอลิเมอร์แห่งดัชต์และประธานฝ่ายวิชาการด้านเทคโนโลยียาง (พ.ศ. 2545-2555) ปัจจุบันดำรงตำแหน่งประธานองค์กรประชุมวิชาการยางนานาชาติหรือ International Rubber Conference Organization และกองบรรณาธิการของวารสาร Rubber Chemistry and Technology และ Journal of Rubber Research

ศาสตราจารย์ ดร.ยาโคบุส วิลเฮลมุส มาเรีย นอร์เดอร์เมียร์ มีความเชี่ยวชาญด้านเทคโนโลยียางและพอลิเมอร์ซึ่งได้รับการยอมรับอย่างกว้างขวางระดับโลก มีความเชี่ยวชาญพิเศษเป็นที่ประจักษ์ชัดในแวดวงวิชาการยางทั้งทางด้านยางสังเคราะห์โดยเฉพาะยางอีพีดีเอ็ม เทอร์โมพลาสติกอิลาสโตเมอร์ เคมีของปฏิกิริยาวัลคาไนเซชั่น การรีไซเคิลและดีวัลคาไนซ์ยาง และเทคโนโลยีซิลิกา-ไซเลนสำหรับอุตสาหกรรมยางล้อ จากประสบการณ์การทำงานในภาคอุตสาหกรรมร่วมกับความสามารถทางวิชาการที่เข้มแข็ง ทำให้สามารถสร้างกลุ่มวิจัยด้านยางที่ตอบสนองความต้องการของอุตสาหกรรมยางในยุโรปและภูมิภาคอื่นได้อย่างดีเยี่ยม มีการทำงานวิจัยที่มุ่งเน้นการใช้ประโยชน์ได้จริง ตลอดชีวิตการทำงานได้ทุ่มเทเพื่อการศึกษาและการทำงานวิจัยที่ก่อให้เกิดการพัฒนาที่สำคัญทางด้านวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีของยาง มีผลงานตีพิมพ์ในวารสารวิชาการมากกว่า 200 เรื่อง จดสิทธิบัตร 15 เรื่อง และเป็นผู้เขียนบทความในหนังสือจำนวนมาก จากความสามารถเชิงวิชาการที่ยอดเยี่ยมทำให้ได้รับรางวัลที่สำคัญหลายรายการ เช่น รางวัลเหรียญทองจากองค์กรประชุมวิชาการยางนานาชาติหรือ IRCO (พ.ศ. 2548/2549) รางวัล George S. Whitby Award จากฝ่ายยางของสมาคมเคมีอเมริกัน (พ.ศ. 2553) ดัตซ์มาสเตอร์ด้านวัสดุ (พ.ศ. 2554) และรางวัลความสำเร็จในชีวิตสำหรับนวัตกรรมและผลงานที่ยอดเยี่ยมระดับนานาชาติด้านเทคโนโลยียางล้อ (พ.ศ. 2559)

การสนับสนุนด้านวิชาการแก่ประเทศไทยและมหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์เริ่มต้นจากการเยี่ยมชมคณะวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีเป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2546 ในครั้งนั้นได้มีการบรรยายวิชาการและหารือความร่วมมือกับบุคลากรของภาควิชาเทคโนโลยียางและพอลิเมอร์ ความร่วมมือทางวิชาการที่เข้มแข็งได้เริ่มต้นขึ้นตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2547 หลังจากที่มีอาจารย์ของคณะวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีไปทำวิจัยหลังปริญญาเอกและมีนักศึกษาระดับปริญญาเอกภายใต้ที่ปรึกษาร่วมกัน นับแต่นั้นมาได้มีการทำงานวิจัยร่วมกันอย่างใกล้ชิดกับหลักสูตรปริญญาเอก สาขาเทคโนโลยีพอลิเมอร์ จนกระทั่งมีการลงนามข้อตกลงความร่วมมือระหว่างมหาวิทยาลัยและก่อให้เกิดการจัดทำหลักสูตรสองปริญญาร่วมในปี พ.ศ. 2551 โดยได้รับการสนับสนุนจากมูลนิธิยางธรรมชาติแห่งดัตซ์ หลักสูตรสองปริญญาร่วมนี้ประสบความสำเร็จอย่างมากในรอบ 10 ปีที่ดำเนินงานมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน ที่ผ่านมา ศาสตราจารย์ ดร.ยาโคบุส วิลเฮลมุส มาเรีย นอร์เดอร์เมียร์ ได้มีส่วนช่วยพัฒนาบุคลากรให้กับมหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์จำนวน 4 คน ดูแลนักศึกษาระดับปริญญาเอก 8 คน จนเกิดผลงานตีพิมพ์ร่วมกันในวารสารวิชาการระดับนานาชาติแล้วประมาณ 50 เรื่อง มีการนำเสนอผลงานวิจัยที่เป็นผลงานร่วมกันจำนวนมากในที่ประชุมวิชาการระดับนานาชาติ ก่อให้เกิดการยอมรับและรับทราบในวงกว้างถึงความร่วมมือระหว่างมหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์กับ University of Twente ผลงานวิจัยที่เกิดขึ้นส่งผลต่อการพัฒนาอุตสาหกรรมยางโดยเฉพาะในภาคส่วนยางล้อ นอกจากนี้ในสายตาของศิษย์ที่ได้ทำงานภายใต้การดูแลนั้นต่างยอมรับในความเป็นครูที่แท้จริงของศาสตราจารย์ ดร.ยาโคบุส วิลเฮลมุส มาเรีย นอร์เดอร์ เมียร์ ที่ทุ่มเทอย่างไม่รู้จักเหน็ดเหนื่อยในการให้ความรู้ด้วยความมุ่งมั่นและใส่ใจ ความรับผิดชอบในการพัฒนาศิษย์แต่ละคนให้เกิดการพัฒนาอย่างมีคุณภาพ เป็นสิ่งที่จะยืนยันได้ว่าทุกคนจะได้รับการศึกษาอย่างดียิ่ง

แม้ว่าศาสตราจารย์ ดร.ยาโคบุส วิลเฮลมุส มาเรีย นอร์เดอร์เมียร์ จะมีอายุ 72 ปีแล้ว แต่ยังคงมุ่งมั่นทำงานแบบไม่รู้จักเหน็ดเหนื่อยเพื่อประโยชน์ของเพื่อนมนุษย์ ทั้งในและนอกมหาวิทยาลัย นอกเหนือจากงานวิชาการแล้ว การทำงานอาสาเพื่อสังคมและชุมชมยังเป็นสิ่งที่ได้กระทำอย่างต่อเนื่องตลอดมา และเมื่อเดือนเมษายน พ.ศ. 2562 ที่ผ่านมา ศาสตราจารย์ ดร.ยาโคบุส วิลเฮลมุส มาเรีย นอร์เดอร์เมียร์ ได้รับเครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์จากพระมหากษัตริย์แห่งราชวงศ์ Orange-Nassau ราชอาณาจักรเนเธอร์แลนด์ ชั้น Officer การได้รับเครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์ในราชอาณาจักรเนเธอร์แลนด์ถือเป็นเกียรติยศสูงสุดและมีความพิเศษเป็นอย่างยิ่งในชีวิต เนื่องจากผู้ได้รับจะต้องมีผลงานเป็นที่ประจักษ์ต่อสังคม และลำดับชั้น Officer มีผู้ได้รับเพียงไม่กี่คนต่อปี

ด้วยเหตุนี้ ศาสตราจารย์ ดร.ยาโคบุส วิลเฮลมุส มาเรีย นอร์เดอร์เมียร์ ซึ่งเป็นผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิที่มีผลงานดีเด่นทางด้านการสอน การวิจัย และเป็นผู้อุทิศตนเพื่อการพัฒนาทางวิชาการ การสร้างบุคลากร และการสร้างประโยชน์แก่สังคมส่วนรวม สภามหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์ในคราวประชุมครั้งที่ 407 (3/2562) เมื่อวันที่ 1 มิถุนายน 2562 ได้มีมติเอกฉันท์ให้ ศาสตราจารย์ ดร.ยาโคบุส วิลเฮลมุส มาเรีย นอร์เดอร์เมียร์ ได้รับปริญญาดุษฎีบัณฑิตกิตติมศักดิ์ (เทคโนโลยีพอลิเมอร์) เพื่อเป็นเกียรติสืบไป
